Ted Turner claims global warming will lead to cannibalism...

I saw this on Fox News the other day, and thought it was so ridiculous I had to see it again.  Apparently, Ted Turner has gone so far off the deep end that he's now suggesting that global warming will lead to most of the world's population dying and those that remain will become cannibals.

Really.  I didn't make this up.  Here's a video of the interview on YouTube.

Now we've known for a while that Ted Turner is a ultra liberal.  And we've suspected he has some off-the-wall views.  But this is really too much.  Cannibalism?

Besides getting a good laugh at Turner's expense, I'm posting this because global warming is becoming the new "popular" political cause to support, and more and more people are assuming it is a legitimate issue without investigating it.   I'm not going to take the time to analyse the science being global warming in general, at least not right now.  But I will take a moment to pick apart Turner's statements:

1) Because the earth is 8 degrees warmer, "none of the crops will grow, and most of the people will die."  While the already hot parts of the world probably won't be good places to plant things, how about using HALF THE GLOBE that is currently either frozen or too cold to grow crops.  I'm sure Russia and Canada would love to see it 8 degrees warmer year round.

2)..."most of us will become cannibals"  Hmmm... Turner started this ridiculous argument by saying that the earth will grow 8 degrees warmer in 20 or 30 years.  Wikipedia lists Ted Turner as 70 years old.  Unless this post-apocalyptic cannibal-ridden future of his also contains some pretty advanced medicine, odds are none of us have to worry about good ole Ted coming to eat us in 30 years.

3) "the few people that are left will be living in a failed state like Somalia or Sudan"... So not only are people not going to attempt to grow things in the now warmer Canada and Russia, but they're going to choose to live in what is already one of the hottest climates on earth?  Seems to me if the earth is getting warmer, people would move north.  Birds to it all the time.  Moreover, if I was living in a lawless world where no one had enough food, I think I'd want to be in the remnants of a nation that at least has paved roads everywhere.

4) "not doing it [he means preventing global warming, presumably] is suicide.  Just like dropping bombs on each other- nuclear weapons- is suicide."  So driving an SUV and contributing to global warming is just as bad for humanity than nuclear war, eh?  Seems to me that if humanity is starving because the earth is so hot that nothing would grow, a little nuclear winter wouldn't be so bad.

5) "We have too many people.  That's the problem.  We have global warming because we have too many people using too much stuff." ...so the solution is what?...kill off a bunch of people?  How are we gonna do that if we give up our nuclear weapons?  Besides, we have to leave some people alive, otherwise we wouldn't have anyone to eat when the corn stops growing...

It's a good thing this clip was only a few minutes long.  I could respond to these stupid arguments forever...

Perhaps Ted Turner was not

Perhaps Ted Turner was not paying attention to the environmentalists in the 1960s when he took over the billboard business from his father, which could not have survived had not all those gas guzzling ozone depleting vehicles passed by those eye-sores.  At that time the "greenhouse effect," now know as global warming, was going to end life on the planet by about 2010.  And of course he probably did not read "The Population Bomb," a best-selling book written by Paul Ehrlich in 1968, in which he predicted disaster for humanity due to overpopulation and the "population explosion."  The book predicted that in the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death, and nothing short of "zero population growth" could prevent it.  Now that Ted owns more U.S. land than any other American, he is accumulating the largest bison herd in the world to supply his restaurant chain.  If he claims to be such a good environmentalist then doesn't he know that meat production starts with the loss of cropland, forests, and open space to create grazing land?  Turner has done some very good things with his money, but the capitalist within him sometimes contradicts his environmentalist side.

Ted Turner

Ted Turner is proof that self abuse can either make you go blind or make you a moron!!!

  I don't think that he's blind yet!
