The big news this past week was former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's new book. McClellan, who formerly vehemently defended President Bush to the press, now attacks the administration and makes a variety of significant accusations.
While many on both sides of the political spectrum have considered McClellan's book simply an attempt to make some money (and get back at the administration that fired him), there are some in the far left that are already talking of Congressional hearings and new investigations into Bush, Cheney, and others. Luckily, the American people still have Bob Dole to defend them.
Yes, you heard correctly. The now 84 year old Bob Dole is not only still following politics, he has stepped back up to offer his opinion. In a scathing email to Scott McClellan, Dole blasted the former Press Secretary, calling him a "miserable creature" and an "ingrate," among other things.
Here's the full text of the email, found on an article at FoxNews.com [1]:
Scott, There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don't have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues. No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique. In my nearly 36 years of public service I've known of a few like you. No doubt you will "clean up" as the liberal anti-Bush press will promote your belated concerns with wild enthusiasm. When the money starts rolling in you should donate it to a worthy cause, something like, "Biting The Hand That Fed Me." Another thought is to weasel your way back into the White House if a Democrat is elected. That would provide a good set up for a second book deal in a few years. I have no intention of reading your "exposé" because if all these awful things were happening, and perhaps some may have been, you should have spoken up publicly like a man, or quit your cushy, high profile job. That would have taken integrity and courage but then you would have had credibility and your complaints could have been aired objectively. You're a hot ticket now but don't you, deep down, feel like a total ingrate? BOB DOLE
So why should we listen to Bob Dole instead of McClellan? Well for starters, Dole makes some good points. If McClellan really believed in all of the things he wrote, why would he continue to defend the administration to the press? Why not resign then, and come forward?
It seems to me that this new book of McClellan's pretty much proves him to be both unethical, and dishonest. Either he was lying to the press and the American people back then in order to keep his job, or he's lying now to sell books.
I don't know how Fox got a hold of this email, but according to their coverage on Fox News Channel, they actually called Dole's office to confirm the email was real before airing the story. So apparently I wasn't the only one surprised to see such harsh words from Dole. I must say, I'm pretty impressed by Dole's forcefulness. If the public had seen this side of Dole when he ran for President, perhaps he would have won.
